The EU funded YDS project has developed a highly customizable online platform for data exploitation focused on the financial flows that are critical for transparency, collaboration, and participation.
YDS has demonstrated applications that support users to interconnect, search, analyse, explore and understand available data in order to extract insights, facts, and material to support and shape their data stories. In particular, YDS offers i) the backbone in terms of a semantic data model & a powerful architecture for bringing together heterogeneous data from siloed data sources; and ii) an easy & user-friendly solution allowing drill-down, visual exploration and combination of data into meaningful stories.
YDS infrastructure & the provided reusable components have been used to create a set of visualisation apps, ranging from Web applications (offering facet search, workspaces & dashboards, “wizard-like” interfaces allowing various kind of stakeholders to find, understand and consume the data), to mobile & social media applications that inform citizens and gather their feedback.
ΥDS has been piloted and validated through three different usage scenarios. The first pilot, Follow Public Money, advanced fiscal transparency and participation through the intelligent and personalized re-purposing by citizens and businesses of large volumes of publicly available data of public procurement. The pilot was based on the open dataset provided by the Greek Transparency Program Initiative (Diavgeia) and the National Strategic Reference Framework 2007–2013. Diavgeia project represents the most progressive transparency effort on a global scale since it is based on a comprehensive, pro-active, real-time, and machine-processable open data provision. The second pilot, Tracking Development Aid and International Trade, analyzed international development cooperation and its relations to international trade from a Dutch point of view. The scope of the pilot was extended to include many European countries. The third pilot on Cross-Europe Financial Comparability focused on the comparability of financial data across EU member-states to examine data at EU, National and Local level. It particularly studied the city of Galway in Ireland and compared it to other EU cities.
The latest version of the YDS platform was released in January 2018 after successful validation involving the three above mentioned test case scenarios.
