OPTET

Operational Trustworthiness Enabling Technologies

In the past trust was one of the drivers that lead to a self-reinforcing cycle of (largely beneficial) socio-economic activity facilitating distribution, sharing and collaboration. However, trust in the Internet and in Internet-based applications is eroding. OPTET aimed to reverse that trend and substantially increase the trust and confidence in Internet based systems, applications and services. To achieve this goal, OPTET considered these systems, applications and services as socio-technical systems; identifies processes to manage the trustworthiness of these systems, and develops technologies that enable evidence-based trustworthiness management. The potential of the OPTET results were demonstrated and evaluated in the context of two operational use cases one in Cyber Crisis management domain and the other one Ambient Assisted Living.

OPTET defined a unique approach that is designed to cover all relevant aspects of trust and trustworthiness. The approach started with a unified cross-disciplinary model of trust and trustworthiness: designed by a team including social scientists, economists, legal experts & computer scientists. This model was used to represent and quantify the trust of all stakeholders and the trustworthiness of socio-technical systems.
The OPTET project delivered a set of generic enablers for trust in order to:

  • Improve European industrial competitiveness in secure & trusted cloud and service-based ICT;
  • Accelerate the uptake of large scale heterogeneous systems for serious applications and domains;
  • Increase the trustworthiness of systems;
  • Enable consumers to make informed decisions about trustworthiness and to adapt their trust perception;
  • Scale to heterogeneous technologies and platforms.

The results from OPTET allowed trust and trustworthy generic enablers to be embedded into existing service platforms, such as FI-WARE and UNIVERSAAL. OPTET delivered:

  • A unified model of trust and trustworthiness
  • A trustworthy application factory using a full life-cycle approach for the design, development, deployment and operation of trustworthy systems based on evidence
  • A Trustworthy Service Marketplace allowing the selection of services based on trust and security concerns.
  • Monitoring tools to evaluate the trustworthiness status of a system
  • Validation via integration within two disparate scenarios and platforms.

ATC was leading the integration activities.

The project started in November 2012 and had a duration of 36 months.
