Analysing and verifying Social Media content

Athens Technology Center (ATC) and Deutsche Welle (DW) were awarded co-funding from Google’s Digital News Initiative (DNI) to develop a set of digital tools that  aid journalists in social media content aggregation, curation and, most importantly, verification.

ATC and DW utilised their successful history as a basis for working together on a social media verification platform. The goal of the partnership was to develop and ultimately provide verification tools that can be integrated seamlessly into journalistic workflows.

ATC and DW create an effective partnership due to the symbiotic nature of their expertise. For DW, this pertains to concept development, verification best practice know-how, a deep knowledge of social media workflows, and a drive to develop solutions that are tailor-made for the needs and requirements of journalists and the media industry. ATC offers expertise in the provision of state-of-the-art technology for news and content asset management systems, social media analysis know-how, as well as software development skills.

A prototype platform, branded as Truly Media, is now available as a commercial service having been tested live in the newsroom of DW, as well as by other large media organisations.

The project started in June 2016 and had a duration of 16 months.
